Most of us think of bank robbery and bank robbers in connection with the frontier days of the American West. But one of the earliest—if not the earliest—bank robberies was committed in 1831 by one Edward Smith to the tune of more than $200,000. And he did the deed on Wall Street, in New York City.Regardless, it took those stylish boys from Missouri, the James and Younger Gang, to turn bank robbery into a regular source of income. Jesse, Frank and Cole learned their hit-and-run tactics from their guerilla service with Capt. William Clark Quantrill and Bloody Bill Anderson during the War of Northern Aggression, as Southerners were inclined to refer to the Civil War. The same tactics they used on Union soldiers worked quite nicely after the war, when Jesse and the boys decided that some of the banks needed to be relieved of their assets.

Today, many historians suggest that the ways of the American frontier were over and done with by the year 1900. They may suggest that, but they never convinced Butch Cassidy and the Wild Bunch, Henry Starr, the Newton Gang and many other outlaw groups who continued robbing.

The man who made bank robbery an art form was John Herbert Dillinger from Indianapolis. His mother passed away in 1907, and John grew up with a chronic resentment for authority and a distinct lack of interest in working for an honest living.During a stint in the Indiana State Prison, Dillinger associated with several career criminals. Then, as now, prisons tend to be the finishing schools for those inclined to live a criminal life, and Dillinger was no exception.

Beginning in 1933, Dillinger and his newfound associates undertook a series of bank robberies in the Midwest. From 1933 to 1934, Dillinger and his gang robbed approximately a dozen banks, taking away loot totaling about $300,000. That’s a lot of money today, so one can imagine how much it was in those early Depression days.

Dillinger put numerous finishing touches on bank robberies. He and his gang meticulously cased the banks before pulling a heist, paying special attention to the number of entrances and the number of guards employed. In addition, they drove every possible escape route that could be used to make their getaway.Just prior to the robbery, they would steal a getaway car and then ditch it as soon as possible, making the rest of their escape in legally purchased vehicles.

Finally, John Dillinger seemed to realize that the gang should avoid unnecessary shooting. Robbing a bank was one thing, but killing innocent people would really bring the heat down on them. It was to be avoided if at all possible. Legend has it that this caused friction between Dillinger and Baby Face Nelson, because Nelson really seemed to enjoy shooting people. John Dillinger would rather awe the crowd by vaulting over a bank counter and playing the Robin Hood character to the hilt.

Pretending to be happy is but a sad distraction
I rush to give you my silent warning a gentle squeeze of your hand
As I glance at the path i’ve walked, i’ve endured, companionless
My face is overwhelmed with a familar aroma and the duest keeps piling up
I collapse outside of town, land softly
My legs are weary of their endless journey
And fleeting memories run through my head
I see the same profile, hear the same words over and over
Like the girl who asked me “isn’t life so sad when all you do is live?”
You’re still careless, young and helpless…
Disapperaing into a hollow void
Now haveing witnessed sadness you should never have seen
Crying tears that should have remained dry
We may not be tough enough to live on truth alone,but you know, we dont need to be

Have you ever felt close or in love with a certain degree of possesiveness about any inanimate objects,to the extent that it actually hurts you to see someone else use's it??

Imagine a world in which people seem hostile while inanimate objects appear friendly – even affectionate. Imagine dreading the touch of another human but longing for a passionate encounter with a large public structure.If it sounds very weird to you,which i doubt it will but i know a lot of people like that. ASHWIN is head over heels with his car to an extent that he says its like his wife.I feel like this over a lot of things,but now the object in question is my computer.Trust me when i say that i feel a lot of hate, when someone else is using my computer. I spend so much time with the bloody thing that i feel a certain level of emotional attachment to it. Whenever someone else is using my Comp i am usually by their side to check every lil thing they do lest they do the something stupid to bring hell upon themselves,cos thts where they are going to be if the computer stop's working.

YU wanna know wats retarded?? Indian Television.
It has become such a form of botheration holding no form of appeal for any educated person in his right senses.While most of the popular game shows are just ripoff''s of shows broadcasted elsewhere in the globe.'Kaun Banega Crorepati?' ,'Big Brother' ,'Deal Ya No Deal'............. Do i even have to list them out.

And the copycat territory doesn end here. Yu will have to think very hard to find a channel which doesn have a dance show or a singing contest, Whilst the news channels give new meanings to the phrase 'Mountain out of molehills'.

Saving the worst for the last. I cant believe that such a vast majority of the indian Population mainly the women are so into masochism. 'Megaserials' as they put it. Please. I would rather be hung by my legs and shot twice in the gut then be put through such torture everyday of the year for so man years. Does it ever end.

Indian television showcases the death of creativity in the majority of the populace.

BooHoo.... A lot of time has been wasted and money spent,but i still cant find a decent place to do Shisha. :( I am not exactly hooked to shisha but somehow the flavours get to me. Now the reason to whine is that the options for a shisha joint in chennai is limited to about five or six places.

I guess the first thing tht come's to a chennaiites mind by the mention of Shisha is Mocha.Well,I
guess its a great place and a lot of ppl like it,but wat gets on my nerves is tht its not very comfortable. Its not really a lounge experience which i would prefer.And pls dont mind the mosquitoes and heat(seriously,Alfresco is not for chennai).

While Mojo is nice and comfortable its a tad to annoying cos they dont do more than three coal changes,which is not much. :( and my wallet cries everytime the bill comes.

Pls dont Mind CASA Piccolo.I jus dont find the place too good.

Hope Chennai gets a good Shisha joint soon.......

Muscle

Tuesday, October 20, 2009

Cars,bikes planes and anything that has anything to do with them have always fascinated me.But i dint want to monopolise my posts on them.I dint want my blog to be jus another AUTO-BLOG.
I wanted it to be as random as possible.And thats probably why i have waited so long to write about them.Getting on to them..............

It wasn’t long ago that dinosaurs roamed the earth. The ground trembled when they moved and lesser species ran for cover when they roared.They were bigger,badder meaner and faster than the others.
I am, of course, talking about the era of the muscle car.They have the power to fascinate generation after generation.There have been faster cars;cars that
handled and braked better; and automobiles that exuded more sex appeal, but those mighty muscle cars of the 1960s and early ‘70s are still king of the
hill in the minds of many enthusiasts,for the sheer fact that they have more history,sentiment and heritage to them!

Muscle cars are as american as Apple Pie.Now wat are they?? To some people it might mean strong, American cars. To others, it means pure or raw power.
The muscle era started in the mid 1960’s in the USA. You had the Ford Mustang, Dodge Charger, Chevrolet Camaro, and one of the most desired cars, the
Chevrolet Corvette.

These cars have been the pin up poster's on the walls of millions of teen's in the US of A.They were not just a way to get from Point A to B but a Passion,a dream and an
integral part of the American dream.You always drive into the sunset in of them.

"The right arm of the Free World"

Sunday, October 4, 2009

The AK47 is one of the iconic images of the past 100 years. More than 100 million AK-series rifles have been built - the vast majority of them serving the militaries of totalitarian dictatorships,the private guards of warlords and thugs,and “revolutionary” groups around the Second and Third Worlds from the 1950s to today. It’s the AK-series that served everyone from the guards at Red Square to the Viet Cong to the militias of Mogadishu. The AK was romanticized by the Americans as the villains weapon and has been demonized for the same.It developed a substantial mythology that largely obscures the political and social aspects of its design; rugged and easily maintained by illiterate peasants.It is the very antithesis of the tradition of marksmanship. But this is not about the AK.

The west never developed a counter-icon with the counter-culture romance of the AK-indeed, since so much of the survival of the west involved refuting the idea of the romantic totalitarian hero, that’s completely appropriate.But if the west did have a counter-icon, it’d likely be the FN-FAL.

The Fusil Automatique Léger (Light Automatic Rifle) or FAL is a 7.62x51mm NATO self-loading,selective fire rifle produced by The Fabrique Nationale de Herstal (FN) during the Cold War, and adopted by many NATO countries. It has also been adopted by many other nations for their armed forces and has proven to be a popular civilian rifle for hunting and sport shooting. The FN FAL was also produced under license in many of the adopting countries. Because of its prevalence and widespread use among the armed forces of many Western and other non-Communist countries during the Cold War, it was nicknamed "the right arm of the Free World".

It’s powerful - unlike the AK with its short 7.62×39mm “intermediate” round, it fires a full-powered 7.62×51mm round.It’s accurate in a way the AK never could be. It’s a marksman’s rifle; while it could spray automatic fire. It’s rugged like the AK, but it wasn’ “simple”; where the AK was a cheap specimen that could be manufactured in any third-world machine shop, the FAL was the product of old-world European craftsmanship, painstakingly machined to fairly tight tolerances. And yet, in battle after battle around the world for fifty years, when the forces of “revolution” and thuggery took to the field with their AK47s, they were more often than not faced with troops with the FAL. As the USSR and NATO stared each other down from the fifties through the ’80s, many of the NATO troops that stared back across the border - the Dutch, the Belgians, the British and Canadians and many others - carried the FAL. As did the US - almost:

The FAL is falling out of front-line service with the world’s marquee armies; the Brits traded the SLR in for the space-age looking IW; the Dutch, Belgians and Canadians,the Australians, the Austrians and even the Irish traded theirs in for more modern weapons.And yet the FAL soldiers on around the world, in places like India and Brazil and South Africa and, in places like Zimbabwe and Venezuela, alongside its old nemesis, the AK.

Since the late 1950s, the Indian armed forces had been equipped with a FAL variant alleged to be reverse-engineered, which is designated the 1A SLR (Self Loading Rifle). This copy is considered to be a distinct weapon (although certainly not an original design) which has features from both Commonwealth inch-dimensioned versions as well as metric FALs. It was the mainstay rifle of the Indian Army for almost 45 years, and first saw combat use during the 1965
war with Pakistan. The variant manufactured in India is restricted to semi-automatic fire like the British and Canadian Versions. The replacement for the 1A is the INSAS family of rifles,carbines and light machine guns - partially derived from the SLR but also with AK features, but in 5.56 mm. Considerable number of SLRs continue to be used by constabulary and police forces of India. Indian 1A SLRs have been provided to Nepal.

I DONT CARE

Apathy is a state of indifference, or the suppression of emotions such as concern, excitement, motivation and passion. An apathetic individual has an absence of interest or concern to emotional, social, or physical life. They may also exhibit an insensibility or sluggishness.Apathy is said to be a effect of witnessing horrific acts as in war and also relate to mental conditions suh as depression,schizophrenia,dementia etc.

Now i am wondering. Does half of the world population suffer from one of the above mentioned onditions? Almost everyone has heard of the tale of the dead man riding the subway.Its probably just another urban legend but it also reflects on the state of indifference of majority of the populatin? So can this be called APATHY? I dont believe anymore that it is an individual condition but an mass effect.One of the major examples is the voter turnout. If the people
dont care about who are gonna make the laws that are gonna change their lives wat are they gonna care about?

I dono what all this is gonna lead to. And i dont care :P

The goth princess
dressed in darkness
her eyes eternally deep,
my heart torn out of my chest,

In memoriam:Les Paul (June9,1915–August13,2009)

The solid-body electric guitar is more than just an instrument. It’s a work of art, used by musicians the world over.The man we have to thank for that is Lester William Polsfuss, also famously known by every self respecting headbanging metalhead as Les Paul.

The have this man to thank for that. Les Paul arguably did more for the evolution of music in the past 50 years than any other man. His legacy is that of millions of men and women that pick up their first guitar, suck at first and then learn to create magic jamming right from their garage inside closed doors to the Stages wit millions of fans cheering for them.

For the man who created Magic: RIP

The Perseids meteor shower occurs every year between July 25 and August 18, with a peak on August 12. It has its origin in the constellation Perseus.The source of the shower is Comet Swift-Tuttle. Although the comet is far away, currently located beyond the orbit of Uranus, a trail of debris from the comet stretches all the way back to Earth. Records of Perseids activity date back to 36 AD. In 1839, German astronomer Eduard Heis was the first to take a meteor count and discovered that Perseids had a maximum rate of around 160 meteors per hour.

So watch the night sky tonight and catch the amazing sight! Haffun!!

Math and cars?? :O

Friday, August 7, 2009

Man.....While talking about automobiles how losely we use terms such as power,torque,torsion etc.As a mechanical engineer it has taken me quite a while to figure out all that the number crunching,the head breaking formulaes and those assumptions u have to make most of the tym.Makes me wonder how much work goes into those small numbers we take for granted,while loosely discussing cars.Been in a design and fabrication project on cars recently I have begun to realise and respect them.

Btw,Does anyone knw how much BHP the new 'scud' has?? :D

A DECADE OF KARGIL:Remembering Our hero

Saturday, July 25, 2009

What has come to be known as the Kargil War took place at Kargil from May 1 to July 26, 1999, a border war between India and Pakistan and the fourth in the series of such confrontations since the First Kashmir War of 1947-48. It was also India’s first televised war, whose extensive visual reportage created a overwhelming flow in the national psyche a mere decade or so ago. But much water has happened since then, perhaps diluting if not washing away its memory altogether. So now, a decade later, maybe it is once again time to remember Kargil 1999, to ruminate and retrospect on it in the broader context of events today.

I recently checked out the new Mocha that had opened lately in Indra Nagar,Chennai.It was pretty awesome having an all retro look.You sure are taken back to the seventies the moment you step into this place.While the Mocha: Coffees and Conversations at Nungambakkam gives a Moroccan and a Middle East look with velvet and bright colored fabrics, this restaurant all together gives a different style and a look,which is quite refreshing.

The food,though a little on the expensive side is absolutely divine.It even has the calories listed on the menu for the diet conscious.The hot chocolate dishes like the 'lindt hot chocolate'
and 'toblorone shake' is bliss.Mocha Mojo also brings gastronomic revolutions — Molecular Gastronomy, a modern scientific way of preparing and presenting food that ensures the flavours and textures of each dish are tweaked to perfection.

The music selection was something that caught my attention.Coming out of those speakers were some of the greatest hits that i adore.The Queens,Pink floyd and Bob Dylan was soul stirring and is a good add on the ambience.

And wat is mocha without the Shisha,and thank god for it.Though mostly wat you get is the smaller table version,it was cool and quite invigorating.

Bottomline,the price seems to be quite on the higher side and it will draw the elite class mostly. But with no second thoughts, head straightly to Mocha Mojo and you will be transported to the 70’s in no time!

My crack at poetry..........

I believe letting go Was the worst mistake of my life.
It's just so difficult being me Instead of we.
now losing touch with life's reality.

R.I.P. Michael Jackson: The Greatest of All Time

Monday, June 29, 2009

It still has not hit me. It feels so strange. Michael Jackson is dead. He was only 50 years old, a milestone age. He just celebrated the 25th anniversary of "Thriller," the best-selling album of all time, and re-released it in February.He was scheduled to start his show run in London in a few weeks at the O2.Maybe Michael's career had reached its peak, but I was not convinced that he was done with music. When he turned 50 last August,everyone wondered if he would make a comeback,if he would get past the controversies dominating his news coverage for the past 10 years.The answer was a yes. He had planned for a comeback concert at London.

People often underestimate the power of music, and the effect that it has on us. We sometimes forget how a great song with a feel-good message lifts us up, and makes us smile and remember the place we had the most fun dancing to it and with whom.Michael Jackson is one of the few artists in the history of the art form to be able to take one song, like "Billie Jean," and reach people of all age groups,races, and nationalities.Michael has done this time and time again for decades, as both a solo artist and member of The Jackson 5.

This type of legacy cannot be erased by even the most horrible of charges and allegations. His music and performances are historic and forever engrained in our hearts.He has been the guy considered invincible who always seems to come back. He is only 50. He was on the verge of such a big comeback with his concerts. No matter what he's gone through or what the crazy circumstances and dark period of his life with that poor trial-that taken aside-he is one of the musical geniuses of our times, truly the King of Pop.I never learned to do his moonwalk dance move, but like everyone else, I was blown away when I see him do it.

I know he had been dealing with a lot these last few years. I hope that at the time of his passing he was in a happy place. Reportedly, he had been rehearsing in Los Angeles for the last two months, preparing for his London dates. His 50-year-old life may have been short, but it was impactful. His accomplishments are tremendous.I offer my sincere condolences to his children, parents, siblings, and other family members, and to his friends and fans.

The New Limca Jingle

Thursday, June 25, 2009

Its been sometime since the Coca-cola came up with this beautiful Limca ad. I don’t think I have seen any better cold-drinks ad than this one till date. It has become a rage these days with brands such as Airtel, Hutch, TOI, Insurance ads etc all trying to hit the emotional quotient of people and with this ‘freshness of emotions’ theme, I think, Coca-cola has gone one step ahead.

The idea of splashing of water was very refreshing and the cool melodious score in the background was just icing on cake. It reminds me of the song ‘bhaagey re mann kahin’ from chameli where most of the things except the purpose are quite similar to the ones in this ad. It maintains a subtle pace throughout the show and the perfect balance in all respects keeps everyone glued to it till the end. It’s a treat to watch it at the end of a long hard day work and the lyrics is also so soothing that one keeps humming it throughout the remaining time. With it providing both visual and audio appeal and the perfect execution by actors, singer and other artists, it has certainly gone down well with the young adults of our generation. Its something that everyone in todays fast moving world can relate to and it definitely deserves a place in my all time favourites. Kudos to it and would like to end with its lyrics only:

“Fuhaarein, bochharein, nazaaare chura lo na,

kuch boondein chura lo na;

Thaki si zindagi se, ruki si zindagi se,

kuch lamhe chura lo na…;

Kuch yaddein, aur sapne, apne chura lo na;

ooo Ruki si zindagi se, thaki si zindagi se,

raftaarein chura lo na…

lukka chupi khelti hai,

bheed mein hazaaron kaliyaan (hazaaron kaliyaan);

mmmm galiyon mein yun bheed banke,

chup gayi hain saari khushiyaan (saari….saari khushiyaan);

Khushiyon ko bula lo na,

muskaane churalo naaaa…

sulagti pyaas hai toh,

machalti pyaas hai toh;

ek limca churalo na.

Kuch yaddein, aur sapne, apne chura lo na;

Ruki si zindagi se, thaki si zindagi se,

raftaarein chura lo na…””

AK 47

Saturday, June 13, 2009

Of all the weapons in the vast soviet arsenal, nothing was more profitable than Avtomat Kalashnikova model of 1947. More commonly known as the AK-47, or Kalashnikov.Chambered for the seven point six two milimeter. It's the world's most popular assault rifle. A weapon all fighters love. An elegantly simple 9 pound amalgamation of forged steel and plywood. It doesn't break, jam, or overheat. It'll shoot whether it's covered in mud or filled with sand. It's so easy, even a child can use it; and they do. The Soviets put the gun on a coin. Mozambique put it on their flag. Since the end of the Cold War, the Kalashnikov has become the Russian people's greatest export. After that comes vodka, caviar, and suicidal novelists. One thing is for sure, no one was lining up to buy their cars.

Throughout the world, the AK and its variants are among the most commonly smuggled small arms sold to governments, rebels, criminals, and civilians alike, with little international oversight.In some countries, prices for AKs are very low; in Somalia, Rwanda, Mozambique, Congo and Ethiopia, prices are between $30–$125 per weapon, and prices have fallen in the last few decades due to mass counterfeiting. Moisés Naím observed that in a small town in Kenya in 1986, an AK-47 cost fifteen cows but that in 2005, the price was down to four cows indicating that supply was "immense".The weapon has appeared in a number of conflicts including clashes in the Balkans, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Somalia.

After the Soviet retreat from Afghanistan, the Soviet Army left quantities of weapons including AKs which were subsequently used in the civil war between Taliban and Northern Alliance and were also exported to Pakistan. The gun is now also made in Pakistan's semi-autonomous areas. It is widely used by tribes in Africa like the Hamar, amongst others.

The World Bank estimates that 75 million AK-47s are available worldwide, out of 100 million Kalashnikov family weapons and 500 million total firearms.Mikhail Kalashnikov addressed the United Nations in 2006 at a conference aimed at solving the problem of illicit weapons, saying that he appreciated the AK-47's role in state-sponsored defense but that counterfeit weapons carrying his name in the hands of "terrorists and thugs"caused him regret.

Western cultures, especially the United States, have seen the AK-47 most often in the hands of nations and groups the United States condemns; first the Soviet Army, then its Communist allies during the Korean and Vietnam Wars. During the 1980s, the Soviet Union became the principal arms dealer to countries embargoed by the United States, including many Middle Eastern nations such as Syria, Libya and Iran, who were willing to ally with the USSR against U.S. interests. After the fall of the Soviet Union, AK-47s were sold both openly and on the black market to any group with cash, including drug cartels and dictatorial states, and most recently they have been seen in the hands of terrorist factions such as the Taliban and Al-Quaida in Afghanistan and Iraq. The AK-47 has thus garnered a reputation in Western nations as a symbol of anti-Americanism, and has gained a stereotypical role as the weapon of the enemy. In the United States, movie makers often arm criminals, gang members and terrorist characters with AKs.

But Personally I think the Kalishnikov is the most Practical and Sought after Weapon in the world!The nuclear weapons the whole world is worried about sit safely in thier silos in all but pristine conditions,Giving nothing but a cold stare to thier enemies.But the kalishnikov and its variants alike do all the dirty work for people on both sides of the law!Seen in all third world countries it is blamed and feared as the killer But the truth is as the famous ATF quote goes "Guns dont kill people.people Kill people".

The Card spells DOOM

Monday, June 1, 2009

Cliche'd as the title may sound,it is true.Not to sound Dramatic but you dont realise that you are in debt until the cold hard truth called the Credit card bill hits you in the face.Credit cards have become an inevitable factor in growing up. Once you turn eighteen it all starts. You receive applications in the mail daily and commercials appear on television as well.You also recieve those annoying phone calls in the middle of an important class,from some bank congratualting you on how lucky you are for being approved for a card you dint even apply for in the first place. This starts to spark an interest. So you say to yourself, "I think I'm responsible enough to get a credit card,I'll only use it for emergencies."

And the sort of emergencies the teens run into these days."Those darling pants in the window which i dont have the cash for" seems like an emergency to the fashion sensible ladies.Of course the guys want a new pair of alloys for their bikes.   Almost everyone has 'maxed out' their card at one point of time.Not only the adolescents but even sensible adults have.Sometime's it may have been a necessity.The most sensible thing to be done is to pay off the total bill. But wat is done is that they pay off the minimum amount without knowing wat is in store for them.And so the credit debt starts and you start falling deeper into this endless pit.On a recent survey it was determined tht 70 percentage of profits of a credit company is from tht debt payment where the interest is as high as 10%.Credit card debt is said to be higher in industrialized countries. The average U.S. college graduate begins his or her post-college days with more than $2,000 in credit card debt.And Credit card debt amount in the USA is nearly 961 billion dollars.Bottom line,use your credit card wisely.

New Soul.

Thursday, May 28, 2009

YAEL NAIM
Israeli pop singer Yael Naim got a big break recently when Apple decided to use her song 'New Soul' in the commercial for their new laptop. According to her bio Naim grew up in Ramat Hacharon near Tel Aviv and "blessed with an unsettlingly pure voice and an incredible agility at composition, the Israeli singer with her jet-black hair fumbled a long time before succeeding with this collection of ballads that meander through folk and pop, with an elegiac frugality and multi-coloured fantasy" (I'm addicted to biography puffery. It's such a demented form of poetry.)

Alternative Fuel??

Wednesday, May 20, 2009

You've read or watched the news lately.You've probably come across some article, snippet or sound bite related to oil and oil prices. Even in your daily routines, there's a good chance of someone mentioning it. Whether it's in automotives, economics, history, geography or politics, oil has managed to filter into almost every aspect of our daily lives. It's one of the most discussed (and controversial) commodities that consumers rely on daily.
All of this talk about oil sparks continued interest in gasoline alternatives. Things like electric cars and hydrogen fuel cells are being talked about as feasible alternatives to oil. As technology improves, these concepts could become reality. But what about now?

Apparently,the very rich men clothed in flowing robes in the middle east see it as a threat.The environmentalists see it as a saviour of the earth,the politicians in their big black V8 cadillacs push it to increase their vote bank.the common man is jus plain confused,and me.I personnally jus dont give a ****.

Let me explain.Electric cars are jus plain slow.If u wanna get to a place before you are ninety i recommend you do not use them.And moreover u get that electricity by burning up a lot of fossil fuel,So it doesn make much sense.And we jus have not yet found a very economical way of storing Hydrogen.Fuel cells are not much of an option either unless u want to be blown all the way to the pearly gates because of some bump down the road.

So i say,to hell with the environment.bring that octane rich beautiful fuel an ride into the sunset happily.
